Scrapbooks of John Genest, ca. 1750-1880.

The collection consists of two scrapbooks which are extra-illustrated supplements to John Genest's book, Some account of the English stage, from the restoration in 1660 to 1830 (1832). The scrapbooks contain portrait and view prints, playbills, autographs, and 70 letters of theatrical persons. Many of the later letters are addressed to Edward Smyth Pigott (1826-1895), Examiner of Plays from 1875-1895.

Edward Frederick Smyth Pigott, 1824-1895, journalist and connoisseur of theatre. In 1850-1860, he was one of the editors of the Leader, a socialist paper, and later was on the staff of the Daily News. A well-known figure in literary circles, Pigott was a lifelong friend of Wilkie Collins.
